The History of Flor de Caña: 135 Years of Family Tradition and Sustainability

La Historia de Flor de Caña: 135 Años de Tradición Familiar y Sostenibilidad

Since 1875 – A Young Italian Sets Out on a Journey

Our story begins in 1875 with Alfredo Francisco Pellas Canessa, a 25-year-old adventurer from Genoa, Italy. Alfredo Francisco risked everything to pursue his vision of building something extraordinary in Nicaragua, an exotic, tropical country that had captured his imagination ever since he first learned of it as a child.

The First of Many Visionary Companies

Alfredo Francisco saw an opportunity during the California Gold Rush in the United States. Transporting people and goods from the East Coast to the West Coast was a long and dangerous journey, so he invested in a shorter and safer steamship route through Nicaragua.

This route not only solved a problem in the U.S., but also made a significant contribution to the Nicaraguan economy. It was a resounding success! However, this success was short-lived. It soon became known that the Panama Canal would be built and that a coast-to-coast railroad would be constructed in the United States. Defeated but not defeated, Alfredo Francisco focused on how he could continue building his dream in the land he loved so much.

1890 – The Story of Flor de Caña Begins

With his sights set on the bountiful land and rich culture that had drawn him across the ocean, Alfredo Francisco pursued a new vision: to create a rum in Nicaragua—known as the land of lakes and volcanoes—that would become one of the world’s most refined spirits. He sought the perfect terroir to grow, distill, and age this rum, and found it in the breathtaking landscape at the foot of Nicaragua’s highest active volcano: San Cristóbal. This volcanic terroir, with its mineral-rich soil and water, combined with a unique tropical climate, was essential to creating an exceptionally smooth rum full of nuanced flavors. It was here, near the Pacific Ocean and in the shadow of a volcano, that Alfredo Francisco began to build his dream.

Five Generations of Innovation, Resilience, and Passion… a Family Legacy

135 years later, Flor de Caña remains the family’s vision and passion. The mastery of rum distillation—from the field to the bottle—and the business of sharing that exceptional rum with the world has been passed down from generation to generation to this very day. Throughout our history, and against all odds—a civil war, hyperinflation, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, fires, and hurricanes—we have sustained and grown Flor de Caña, remaining a thriving family business dedicated to the same dream as Alfredo Francisco: to make Flor de Caña one of the most recognized rums in the world. At Flor de Caña, we are proud to be a fifth-generation family business. Our commitment to craftsmanship and to sharing our exquisitely aged rums with the world is what has allowed us to reach this impressive milestone.
